IV Therapy Course for LPNs

The IV Therapy Course for licensed practical nurses (LPNs) is designed to provide a program of study and subsequent clinical experience for LPNs to prepare, provide and implement successful venipunctures using aseptic technique.

This course will prepare LPNs to perform intravenous therapy for clients weighing greater than 32 kilograms. The course content will focus on the principles and practices of intravenous therapy in various practice settings within the LPN scope of practice. Lectures are designed to review anatomy and physiology, IV solutions, and the calculation of dosage of selected medications administered through selected IV modes. The role of the LPN and the responsibility for administration of fluid therapy related to the LPN’s scope of practice and the nurse practice act in general will be included.

A minimum of 30 hours of theoretical content and lab practice pertaining to IV therapy including classroom, laboratory sessions and experiential learning in a simulated acute care setting will be provided. A certificate will be awarded upon student demonstration of mastery of the content.

This program is open to Dartmouth-Hitchcock employees and affiliates only.
This course is limited to eight attendees.

This program is open to Dartmouth-Hitchcock employees and affiliates only. There is no registration fee, but advance registration is required for planning purposes.

Requirements for Admission to the Course

Must hold a current and unencumbered license in the state of New Hampshire or a current and unencumbered multi-state license.

Curriculum

In addition to this schedule, at least 6 hours of clinical practice with a member of the IV team is required to complete the 30 hour requirement for the course.

Approvals

This course has been approved by the New Hampshire Board of Nursing since 1996.
