Medicine Grand Rounds - Multiple Sclerosis: Review and Role of MS Therapies

This presentation describes the pathophysiology of relapsing and progressive multiple sclerosis, illustrating that it is both an inflammatory and neurodegenerative disease state. Diagnosis is based on clinical presentation, and treatment options are often problematic as prognostication for disease progression is difficult. Treatment approaches are evolving with clinical trials underway; research is focused on slowing neurodegeneration and reducing or even halting the relapsing type of this disease.

    Andrew D. Smith III, MD is an Assistant Professor of Neurology in the Multiple Sclerosis Center at DHMC and at The Geisel School of Medicine. He completed his Neurology Residency and the Neuroimmunology and Experimental Therapeutics Fellowship at the University of Rochester. His expertise is in treatment of multiple sclerosis, autoimmune encephalitis and other neuroimmunological diseases. His clinical research efforts have been in cognition and clinical trial design in multiple sclerosis.
Learning Outcome

Participants will be able to review the current understanding of the pathophysiology, natural history and diagnostic criteria for diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. They will be able to discuss the efficacy of immunotherapies and current treatment approaches including the outcomes measures in clinical trials.
