Enhancing the Awareness of Mental Illness

This program will address the many issues that nurses encounter in the clinical setting in their work with diverse patient populations. This learning activity will focus on the needs of patients with mental illness who seek care for a variety of health needs in our acute and ambulatory settings. The presenters will provide an overview of various mental health disorders and will specifically address:

  • risk factors and warning signs for mental health concerns;
  • use of language that reduces discrimination and stigma; and
  • basic definitions and descriptions of symptoms often associated with mental illness, such as delusions, hallucinations, and cognitive impairment.

Participants will learn how to use listening skills as a form of gathering information and providing support and will be taught to recognize when observations related to patients’ mental health should be shared with the health care team.
