Developing Cultural Competence and Understanding its Role in LNA and MA Practice

Cultural Competence requires excellent listening skills and the ability to build trust with others. Because it influences important outcomes such as patient experience, patient safety, and workforce health, it is an important quality, which Licensed Nurse Assistants (LNAs) and Medical Assistants (MAs) should develop. Yet, being culturally sensitive can be challenging at times, especially when we hold strong beliefs that are different from our patients and peers. How can we learn to avoid assumptions, set-aside biases, and be sure we are treating everyone with dignity?
