Greenbelt training is the most advanced, comprehensive level of process improvement training offered by the Value Institute Learning Center. Greenbelt certification denotes an internationally recognized competency in process improvement tools and project execution.

Over five days, Value Institute instructors will introduce students to the history of process improvement work, project management, team leadership, and the five DMAIC steps of process improvement: define, measure, analyze, improve, and control.

Learning Outcome(s)

At the conclusion of this learning activity the participant will be able to apply robust process improvement methodology and disciplined project execution in order to support the development of a High Reliability Organization focused on a Culture of Safety and Patient Center Care.

Learning Objectives
  • Discuss the importance of active engagement in activities that transform healthcare into a culture that values quality and patient safety.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to improve a healthcare agenda that supports quality and patient safety initiatives.
  • Identify systems challenges and potential solutions that can lead to process improvement in order to advance quality of care and patient safety.

Complete Online Modules Project Leadership A and B prior to attending the class (available once registered).

Course Structure

The course consists of five days of instruction. The course modules cover the five elements of the DMAIC process, as well as the key concepts of project management and team skills. This in-person course is didactic interspersed with group exercises and simulations to reinforce key concepts.

Targeted Audience

This course is intended for individuals with an interest in process improvement work. Applicants should have at least a basic understanding of project management, meeting facilitation, and Microsoft Excel.

Coached Student Pathway

  • D-H staff member paired with Blackbelt coach to execute their Greenbelt certification project
  • D-H member organization staff at a site with Blackbelt coaching support is paired with a local coach to execute their Greenbelt certification project

Independent Study Pathway
This pathway is for external Greenbelts and D-H member organization sites without local Blackbelt coaching support.

  • Completion of online case study to demonstrate understanding and application of the Greenbelt body of knowledge and an interview with a Value Institute learning Center Blackbelt to demonstrate understanding and application of the Greenbelt body of knowledge


  • Independent (non-coached) leadership and completion of two DMAIC projects with project documentation and an interview with a Value Institute learning Center Blackbelt to demonstrate understanding and application of the Greenbelt body of knowledge

Dartmouth-Hitchcock is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Dartmouth-Hitchcock designates this live activity for a maximum of 33.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Nursing Continuing Education Council is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

This educational activity carries 33.25 contact hours.

Receiving Credits/Contact Hours

The following steps must be completed in order to receive credits/contact hours for this event:

  • Register for the event online
  • Attend the event or session(s)
  • Complete the online evaluation - Must be submitted within 30 days after the activity

    Accessing the Online Evaluation and Exam (The evaluation is available the day after the event)

  • Log onto https://ce.dartmouth-hitchcock.org/login.aspx
  • Click on the My Activities link in the left side menu. Then click on the name of the activity you attended.
  • Click on the Resume button.
  • Click the Continue button until the Post-Test/Evaluation tab is active, and then click the Launch button.
  • Complete the Post-Test and Evaluation and then click submit. Credits/Contact hours will then be applied to your transcript. You can view your updated transcript by clicking on the "View Transcript" button.
