Medicine Grand Rounds - Using Big Data to Improve Clinical Care

The collection of large amounts of clinical data from electronic health records, wearables, and patient facing tools is nearly ubiquitous in U.S healthcare. Dr. Bates encourages all organizations to invest in their data and develop a strategy to harness and interpret the patterns and behaviors to gain control of cost, effectiveness and efficiency of care, readmissions, adverse events and other measures that affect point of care delivery and population health.

Participants will be able to describe what represents “big data”, identify three cases which may benefit from big data use in clinical care, and name some of the key steps that are important for evaluating an intervention which utilizes machine learning/artificial intelligence.

    About our presenter:
    Dr. Bates is an internationally renowned expert in patient safety, using information technology to improve quality-of-care, cost-effectiveness, and outcomes assessment in medical practice.  He is a Professor of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard School of Public Health, where he co-directs the Program in Clinical Effectiveness. He directs the Center for Patient Safety Research and Practice at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
