Healthy Lifestyles for Children and Youth with Developmental Disabilities: Food, Family, & Fitness - Cancelled

This program has been cancelled.

Health professionals from a wide variety of disciplines support healthy lifestyles for children and youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). This one-day conference will provide educational opportunities related to the development of healthy eating habits, family mealtime routines, feeding challenges, and physical activity programs.

Morning presentations will provide an overview of the current research on the prevalence and risk for obesity, food selectivity, and physical activity in youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), including those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and offer a definition of mealtime and discuss the idea of routines and habits associated with positive or enjoyable family mealtimes.

Afternoon sessions will explore 1) feeding and swallowing difficulties in the pediatric population with emphasis on identifying critical issues that will impact feeding and nutritional intake and 2) provide an overview of applied research findings regarding barriers to physical activity faced by children with I/DD and describe experiences in developing and implementing physical activity programs for youth with /IDD in community settings.

Time for discussion will be scheduled at the end of the AM and PM sessions.
