Medicine Grand Rounds - How Emerging Science Can Transform Obesity Care

Dr. Kaplan describes why obesity is a disease resulting from inappropriate regulation of metabolism and a dysfunction of normal fat mass mechanisms. He advocates for algorithmic assessment and treatment on an individual basis, incorporating lifestyle changes, medication, devices and surgery depending on the severity and clinical need.

    About our presenter: 
    Dr. Lee Kaplan graduated from Harvard University and received his MD and PhD in molecular biology from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He completed an internship and residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in gastroenterology at MGH and HMS and a fellowship in genetics at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is a board-certified specialist in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and Obesity Medicine. His research focuses on the role of the gastrointestinal tract and gut microbiota in the regulation of energy balance and metabolic function, including the mechanism of action of bariatric and metabolic surgery, as well as the genetic determinants of obesity and its response to therapy.

Dartmouth-Hitchcock is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
