Medicine Grand Rounds - Equity, Efficiency, and ICU Triage during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Participants in Medicine Grand Rounds will be able to identify the most current treatment guidelines, innovations, and standards of practice, and apply them to improve the care of individual patients, promote health and wellness in the population, and achieve clinical quality and safety goals. These educational activities are grounded in principles of health equity, evidence based medicine, inter-professional teamwork, patient-centered care, and respect for human dignity.

Learning Outcome

Participants will be able to present strategies to promote equitable allocation of scarce resources during ICU triage using a suite of equity interventions and a multi-principle triage framework.

    About our presenter: 
    Dr. White graduated summa cum laude from Dartmouth College in 1995 with a degree in English Literature.  He received his medical degree from UCSF and completed a residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at UCSF. While at UCSF, he also completed a Master’s degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics and a fellowship in Bioethics.
    He directs the University’s Program on Ethics and Decision Making in Critical Illness, which is the first program in the country focused on ethical issues in critical care medicine. 

    Dr. White’s scholarship focuses on ethical issues that arise in the care of critically ill patients and on developing interventions to improve surrogate decision making for incapacitated, seriously ill patients.
